Biography

With a passion for service, Kathy Moses Salem has been active in her community for as long as she can remember. She has dedicated countless time and resources to philanthropic causes across the country. Something you might not know – Salem loves jazz music and is an avid supporter of the arts (she is an avid Chinese brush painter, herself). As a Democrat, she stands for equitable access to healthcare, quality education, economic opportunities for all, and environmental protection.

Salem worked as a beautician for twenty years before deciding it was time to begin a new chapter of her life. She spent nearly ten years at the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, working her way up to advertising executive and only leaving when Case Western Reserve University offered her a full-ride scholarship to study History/Business. Immediately following graduation, Salem moved to Washington D.C. where she worked on Capitol Hill and spent two years as a lobbyist. There, she learned life-long values that still govern her actions today: integrity, follow-through, and how to build and maintain meaningful relationships.

Today, Salem is a community leader and philanthropist, donating large sums each year to various causes. She is passionate about women’s healthcare and spent years teaching adult welfare mothers life skills. She has contributed to Northampton Methodist Church so they could complete installation of the rubber floor for their playground, funded construction of a pool building for the Shaw Jewish Community Center, and maintains a personal philanthropic fund which requires her grandchildren to also donate and give back to the community.

Salem’s contributions to education and the arts are even more profound. She funds a History scholarship at Case Western Reserve University. An inner-city music program in Naples, Florida lost 80-90% of their funding due to government cuts, and Salem donated enough money to continue two teachers’ grants so their programs would not suffer. Since 2014, she has been Managing Director and Producer of Night is Alive Productions, a jazz agency that is dedicated to recording music by some of the most intriguing and inventive musicians of this era. Salem also provides monetary scholarships to jazz students in need at Florida A&M, a public, historically black university in Tallahassee. In addition to personally handing out these scholarships and congratulating the recipients, she delivers lectures about management, sharing her story in the hopes of inspiring the next generation.

Salem is determined to spread the same passion and energy that her musicians put into every one of their performances. Her vision for Ohio is one of unity, progress, and prosperity for every resident, regardless of background or circumstance.

Salem resides in Medina and enjoys gardening and spending time with her family.
